Trump says he must be involved in selecting Iran’s next leader, rejects Khamenei’s son

Donald Trump said he believes the United States should be personally involved in selecting the next leader of Iran following the death of its Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in recent US-Israeli strikes.

In an interview, Trump said the possible succession of Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, would be unacceptable to him.

“Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran,” Trump said, adding that he believes Washington must play a role in the selection process.

Trump also compared the situation to Venezuela, saying he wanted to be involved in the appointment “like with Delcy,” referring to Delcy Rodríguez.

Iran has not yet announced a successor to the late supreme leader. Mojtaba Khamenei, a mid-ranking cleric with close ties to the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, is widely seen as one of the most influential figures in Iran’s clerical establishment and a potential candidate to replace his father.

According to reports citing Iranian sources, Mojtaba survived the recent US and Israeli airstrikes that killed his father. The process of selecting Iran’s next supreme leader is normally carried out by the country’s Assembly of Experts, a body of senior clerics, and no official decision has been announced so far.
