Saudi Arabia Issues First-Ever License for Shark Cage Diving

Saudi Arabia has issued its first-ever license for shark cage diving, marking a significant step in the Kingdom’s efforts to promote responsible marine ecotourism. The license was granted by the National Center for Wildlife (NCW) in partnership with the Saudi Water Sports and Diving Federation and authorizes regulated shark cage diving activities at the Ras Hatiba Reserve.

The newly approved permit allows visitors to observe sharks safely in their natural environment through controlled cage diving experiences. The initiative is designed to balance tourism development with the protection of marine ecosystems, ensuring that ecological integrity and biodiversity are preserved.

According to the NCW, the program aligns with national regulations governing marine activities and supports sustainable tourism practices. Strict operational guidelines will be enforced to prevent disruption to shark behavior and to safeguard surrounding marine life and habitats.

The Saudi Water Sports and Diving Federation will play a key role in overseeing compliance with safety, environmental, and professional standards. This includes ensuring diver qualifications, adherence to approved operational procedures, and the implementation of effective monitoring mechanisms.

Ras Hatiba Reserve is recognized as one of Saudi Arabia’s important marine conservation areas, home to diverse marine species and environmentally sensitive ecosystems. The introduction of licensed shark cage diving is expected to raise environmental awareness while offering a unique, carefully regulated tourism experience that highlights the Kingdom’s commitment to marine conservation and sustainable development.
