MSC Mariella becomes largest container ship to enter Bahrain waters

The arrival of the MSC Mariella at Khalifa Bin Salman Port on February 25, 2026, has set a new maritime benchmark for the Kingdom of Bahrain. The vessel is the largest container ship ever to enter Bahrain’s territorial waters, marking a major milestone in the country’s ambition to strengthen its position as a regional logistics hub under its Economic Vision 2030 strategy.

Vessel specifications

The MSC Mariella is classified as an Ultra-Large Container Vessel (ULCV) and belongs to the MSC Irina class. It boasts a carrying capacity of 24,346 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), placing it among the world’s largest container ships.

Measuring approximately 399.9 metres in length and 61.3 metres in width, the vessel represents the latest generation of mega-ships designed for high-volume, long-haul trade routes. It is also equipped with advanced energy-efficiency technologies, including an air lubrication system that reduces hull resistance and a shaft generator that enhances fuel efficiency and lowers emissions.

Strategic significance

The ship’s arrival is part of the “CLANGA” service, a major shipping route that provides direct connectivity between Bahrain and key global markets. The service strengthens the Kingdom’s integration into Asia–Middle East trade corridors and enhances its competitive edge in regional logistics.

The successful handling of a vessel of this scale demonstrates the advanced infrastructure and operational capabilities of Khalifa Bin Salman Port. It validates Bahrain’s investment in port development and logistics modernization, reinforcing confidence among global shipping lines.

From a broader economic perspective, the milestone aligns with Bahrain’s national strategy to diversify its economy beyond oil and gas. Improved maritime connectivity reduces transit times, enhances supply chain efficiency, and supports both import and export activities, key drivers of sustainable economic growth.

The MSC Mariella’s call in Bahrain follows similar landmark port visits at Hamad Port in Qatar and Port of Colombo, underscoring its central role in major Asia–Middle East trade routes.

With this historic arrival, Bahrain has sent a strong signal to the global shipping industry: the Kingdom is ready to accommodate the world’s largest container vessels and play a bigger role in international maritime trade.
