Manama Theatre Club Calls Auditions for Gothic Classic ‘Dracula’

Preparations are underway for the Manama Theatre Club’s (MTC) highly anticipated 2026 production of Dracula, as the long-running community theatre group opens auditions for one of its most ambitious productions in recent years.

The play is based on a script by Richard M. Sharp, which reimagines Bram Stoker’s gothic masterpiece by restoring its sensuality and danger while weaving in elements of dark humor and psychological suspense. MTC members say the adaptation balances classic horror with modern theatrical energy.

Artistically, the production promises a striking visual experience. The set has been described as “abstract gothic,” featuring arches, columns, and flowing drapery designed to evoke an eerie, atmospheric world rather than a literal Victorian setting. The approach aims to immerse audiences in the unsettling mood of the story while allowing the performances to take center stage.

The production is being directed by Amy McGavin and produced by MTC chairperson Hannah Turner, a pairing that brings together experienced creative leadership and the club’s collaborative spirit.

Casting is currently underway for eight principal roles, including Count Dracula, Dr. Van Helsing, Jonathan Harker, Mina Harker, Lucy Westenra, Dr. John Seward, and Renfield, along with several supporting roles. In addition to performers, the club is also welcoming interest from those keen to join the backstage and technical crew.

Auditions are open to men and women aged 20 and above and are being held at the Queen Elizabeth II (QE2) Theatre at the British Club in Manama. The second and final audition session is scheduled for Sunday, January 25, 2026, beginning at 7:00 PM.

Looking ahead, Dracula is expected to be staged in May 2026, with performances structured in two acts, each running approximately 45 to 60 minutes. MTC hopes the production will appeal to both long-time theatre-goers and new audiences drawn to gothic drama.

With its bold design, classic source material, and open call for talent, Dracula is shaping up to be one of the standout theatrical events on Bahrain’s cultural calendar this year.
