Bandra-Worli Sea Link Glows Blue for Avatar: Fire and Ash, Not Bioluminescence
MUMBAI: The recent blue glow on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link has sparked curiosity among locals and social media users, but authorities confirm it is part of a special promotional lighting display, not a natural phenomenon. The illumination was installed to promote the upcoming James Cameron film Avatar: Fire and Ash, scheduled for release in December 2025. Social media users have dubbed the spectacle the “Avatar Glow Up”, sharing photos and videos of the iconic Mumbai landmark bathed in blue light.
While many initially speculated about bioluminescence, a natural phenomenon where marine organisms emit light, the Sea Link’s glow is entirely man-made. True bioluminescence occurs in species like Noctiluca scintillans, also known as “sea sparkle,” which has been observed at Mumbai beaches such as Juhu Beach, where the waves occasionally shimmer neon blue due to the activity of these microbes.
The Bandra-Worli Sea Link is often illuminated with different colors and patterns for festivals, awareness campaigns, and commercial promotions. The current display uses advanced programmable lighting technology, allowing for striking visual effects to celebrate special occasions, entertain the public, and, in this case, promote a major cinematic release.
