Parliament’s Green Initiatives Earn International Recognition

In a landmark achievement, the national Parliament has received international acclaim for its pioneering green initiatives aimed at sustainability and environmental responsibility.
The recognition came from the Global Environmental Leadership Council (GELC), which awarded the Parliament for its transition to renewable energy, adoption of paperless procedures, and implementation of eco-conscious building upgrades. These measures have collectively reduced the institution’s carbon footprint by over 45% in just three years.
Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Amina Bako, noted, “This recognition reflects our unwavering commitment to creating a greener future through leadership by example. Parliament is not just a place of laws, but of action.”
Among the standout features is the installation of rooftop solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and the use of smart lighting and energy-efficient HVAC systems. Moreover, all committee meetings now operate digitally, cutting down on paper waste significantly.
International observers hailed the Parliament’s approach as a model for sustainable governance, with several countries reportedly considering similar transitions within their legislative bodies.
The Parliament has vowed to continue pushing for eco-friendly reforms, not just within its chambers, but across national policy frameworks.
