Norway launches world’s first panoramic night train designed for Northern Lights viewing
Norway has unveiled a new panoramic night train service created specifically for viewing the Northern Lights, offering travelers a unique way to experience one of nature’s most spectacular phenomena in comfort. Known as the Northern Lights Train and sometimes referred to as the Midnight Aurora Route, the service is being described as the world’s first train designed exclusively for aurora viewing.
The seasonal service operates along the historic Ofoten Line, departing from Narvik Railway Station, located north of the Arctic Circle. This route is widely regarded as one of Scandinavia’s most scenic rail journeys and now doubles as a moving observatory for the aurora borealis.
Designed for aurora watching
The train features glass-enclosed carriages with expansive windows and glass roofs, providing uninterrupted 180-degree views of the night sky. Specially designed reclining seats tilt upwards, allowing passengers to comfortably watch the aurora without neck strain, an experience rarely possible on traditional Northern Lights tours.
To enhance visibility, the train uses low interior lighting, minimizing glare and preserving passengers’ night vision. The carriages are fully climate-controlled, offering a warm and comfortable alternative to standing outdoors in sub-zero Arctic temperatures.
Guided and immersive experience
Onboard, passengers are accompanied by English-speaking guides who provide real-time commentary on aurora activity. Multimedia screens display live scientific data on geomagnetic conditions, while guests receive practical photography tips to help capture the Northern Lights through the panoramic glass.
The journey also includes stops at remote mountain stations such as Bjørnfjell and Katterat, where passengers can step off the train to enjoy bonfires and hot drinks beneath the Arctic sky, adding a traditional outdoor element to the experience.
Sustainable Arctic travel
In line with Norway’s environmental priorities, the Northern Lights Train is powered entirely by the country’s renewable hydroelectric grid, making it one of the most sustainable ways to experience Arctic tourism.
The service runs during the peak aurora season from October to March, when Northern Lights visibility is at its highest. Due to strong international interest and limited capacity, advance bookings are highly recommended.
By combining cutting-edge design, scientific insight, and sustainable travel, Norway’s Northern Lights Train offers a new benchmark for aurora tourism and a front-row seat to one of the planet’s most awe-inspiring natural displays.
