Higher Electricity and Water Tariffs Announced for Unsubsidised Users in Bahrain from 2026
Bahrain’s Cabinet has announced an increase in electricity and water tariffs for non-subsidised users, including expatriates, effective from January 2026, while reaffirming full protection for citizens in their primary residences.
The new measures aim to strengthen public finances and ensure sustainable funding for government services, while continuing to support low- and middle-income groups. Subsidised electricity and water rates for the first and second consumption tiers in citizens’ primary households will remain unchanged, with special consideration given to extended families.
Under the revised tariff structure, electricity rates for non-subsidised users will increase from 29 fils to 32 fils per kilowatt-hour, while water tariffs will rise from 750 fils to 775 fils per cubic metre, starting in January 2026.
Finance and National Economy Minister Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa explained that the adjustments form part of a broader fiscal reform package designed to enhance the sustainability of the state budget and improve the efficiency of public spending.
Additional measures announced include the introduction of a 20 per cent sewer service fee on non-residential and non-citizen properties from 2026, as well as a review of labour and health fees related to expatriate workers.
The initiatives were developed through coordination between the executive and legislative authorities, reflecting a joint effort to reinforce Bahrain’s public finances while ensuring the continued provision of essential services for citizens and residents.
