BYD Set to Shake Up Japan’s Kei Car Market with the Racco-
In a bold move that could reshape Japan’s compact car landscape, BYD has unveiled its first all-electric kei car, the Racco. Designed specifically for the Japanese market, the Racco marks the Chinese automaker’s entry into the highly competitive kei car segment a category traditionally dominated by domestic brands like Suzuki, Daihatsu, and Honda. The vehicle made its debut at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, showcasing BYD’s commitment to tailoring its electric vehicles to Japan’s unique driving culture and regulations.
First Glance: Small, Smart, and Stylish-
At first sight, the BYD Racco captures the quintessential kei car design language boxy, upright, and compact, with a total length of just 3,400 mm and width of 1,480 mm, staying neatly within Japan’s kei-class size restrictions. The car’s exterior features sleek C-shaped LED headlamps, a floating roofline, and rear sliding doors, enhancing its practicality and urban-friendly profile. Design cues like its finlike pillar recall the Mitsubishi eK Space, while its confident stance draws inspiration from the Daihatsu Tanto, two of Japan’s most popular microcars.

Reports suggest that the Racco will feature a 20 kWh battery pack, offering an estimated 180 km range on the Japanese WLTC cycle. The car will also support fast DC charging up to 100 kW, allowing quick top-ups for busy city dwellers. BYD’s proprietary Blade Battery technology ensures enhanced safety and durability, while energy-saving features like a heat-pump air conditioning system maximize range efficiency.
Inside, the Racco offers a digital cockpit, with a large central touchscreen, minimalist dash layout, and optional driver-assistance systems. Although compact, the cabin layout makes excellent use of space an area where Japanese kei cars excel.
Pricing and Market Position-
BYD is expected to price the Racco at around ¥2.5 to ¥2.6 million (approximately US $16,500–17,000) before government subsidies placing it directly against models like the Nissan Sakura and Daihatsu e-Smart Mini. With Japan’s growing interest in affordable electric vehicles, BYD’s pricing could prove strategic, particularly as urban consumers look for efficient second vehicles for daily commuting.
Why the Racco Matters-
Japan’s kei car market represents nearly one-third of all new passenger car sales, making it a lucrative but tough segment for foreign automakers to penetrate. BYD’s decision to design the Racco exclusively for Japan signals serious intent not just to sell EVs, but to embed itself in the country’s domestic auto culture.
