Bahrain reinforces priority for citizens in private sector hiring

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that Bahrainis remain the top priority for private sector employment, while intensifying efforts to address delayed salary payments and safeguard workers’ livelihoods.

Labor and Legal Affairs Minister Yousif Khalaf stressed that national policies are carefully structured to balance economic growth with the protection of employment opportunities for citizens in Bahrain.

The minister outlined regulations governing the recruitment of foreign workers, explaining that employers seeking to hire from abroad must observe a mandatory 21-day waiting period before a work permit is approved. During this period, job vacancies must be advertised locally in newspapers for seven days, and qualified Bahraini candidates must be interviewed.

“This mechanism ensures Bahrainis are given a genuine first opportunity to compete for available jobs,” he said. Vacancies are also posted on the National Employment Platform to maximize accessibility for local job seekers.

The measures form part of broader labor market reforms aimed at strengthening workforce participation among citizens while maintaining a business-friendly environment that supports sustainable economic expansion.
