Metro Route Works Begin for Airport-to-Seef Line as Bahrain Advances Public Transport Plans
Preparatory works have officially begun on Bahrain’s long-awaited metro system, with the Airport-to-Seef line and a Juffair-to-Isa Town line set to form the backbone of Phase One, according to the Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications.
HE Dr Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said the ministry is implementing the project in line with the approved national plan and is coordinating closely with relevant authorities to complete route preparation works for the first phase of the Bahrain Metro.
In a written response to a parliamentary question from MP Lulwa Ali Al Rumaihi, the minister explained that the metro is expected to ease traffic congestion by introducing a mass-transit option alongside the existing bus network. The system is designed to shorten travel times, improve daily commuting for citizens and residents, and reduce dependence on private vehicles as Bahrain moves toward a more sustainable public transportation model.
Dr Shaikh Abdulla clarified that the Bahrain Metro and the GCC Railway are being planned and delivered as separate projects. However, he confirmed that coordination is ongoing to ensure future integration between the two networks in line with shared national and regional objectives, noting that progress on one project will not directly impact the other.
Both transport projects are expected to reduce congestion on key road corridors, increase the proportion of trips made using public transport, and establish a reliable, long-term national transport network serving communities across the Kingdom.
On project costs, the minister said a final figure has yet to be determined, as detailed designs are still under development and market conditions remain subject to change. He added that the total cost and any necessary revisions will be confirmed once comprehensive studies and final designs are completed and approved.
Phase One of the Bahrain Metro is planned to include 20 stations, featuring two major interchange hubs located in the Bahrain Financial Harbour area and at the Central Market in Manama. These interchanges are intended to connect the two lines and serve key residential, commercial, and economic districts.
