Bahrain Unveils Buri Masterplan to Transform Historic Village into Metro and Heritage Hub

Plans are in motion to modernise the historic village of Buri, located in northern Bahrain, as part of an ambitious national urban development initiative that aims to blend modern infrastructure with cultural preservation. The Buri Masterplan, recently completed by the Urban Planning and Development Authority, is one of 96 urban schemes designed to enhance livability and economic opportunity across the Kingdom.
Buri is set to play a pivotal role in the country's future, as it is positioned to become a main hub for the proposed Bahrain Metro project, alongside a relocated central market and a planned heritage trail that will celebrate the area's cultural and historical significance.
The masterplan has been widely praised by both local residents and government leaders, including Member of Parliament Dr. Muneer Suroor, who described it as a transformative initiative that successfully balances progress with preservation. “This is not just about infrastructure it’s about identity,” he said, applauding the project’s commitment to maintaining the village's heritage while upgrading public amenities and access.
Residents of Buri echoed this sentiment, welcoming the planned transport links, improved services, and tourism potential, all while retaining the character of one of Bahrain’s oldest villages. The integration of a heritage trail within the urban design ensures that the cultural landscape remains a central feature even as the area adapts to meet future demands.
As Buri prepares to become a key node in the Bahrain Metro network, the project is also expected to stimulate local economic activity, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance connectivity across the Kingdom.
With the Buri Masterplan, Bahrain reinforces its vision of sustainable and inclusive urban growth, where modernisation respects the past, and communities thrive through smart, culturally aware planning.
