Saudi Arabia introduces smart crowd-counting systems at Grand Mosque in Makkah

Saudi authorities have officially introduced advanced smart counting systems at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, strengthening crowd management measures ahead of the expected surge in worshippers during Ramadan and the upcoming Hajj season, according to local media reports.

The newly deployed technology tracks worshippers entering and exiting the mosque’s gates in real time, providing officials with accurate data on crowd density and movement patterns. The system enables authorities to identify congestion points quickly and manage pedestrian flow more effectively across key areas of the holy site.

Officials said the technology allows field teams to make faster, data-driven decisions, including redirecting foot traffic when necessary to prevent overcrowding and ensure safer movement for worshippers.

The smart counting systems are expected to play a crucial role during peak periods, including daily prayer times, Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan, and seasonal Umrah surges, when millions of pilgrims and visitors converge on the Grand Mosque.

The initiative forms part of Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to integrate smart technologies into the management of the Two Holy Mosques, enhancing safety, comfort, and operational efficiency. Authorities aim to ensure a seamless worship experience for pilgrims and visitors throughout the busiest periods of the Islamic calendar.
