Moderate Earthquake Jolts Tajikistan, Tremors Felt Across Pakistan

A moderate earthquake struck the Tajikistan–Xinjiang border region in the early hours of Friday, sending tremors across large parts of Pakistan, but causing no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake measured magnitude 5.8 and occurred at a depth of 159 kilometres at around 2am. Meanwhile, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) recorded the quake at a slightly lower magnitude of 5.3, with a depth of 140 kilometres, using the Moment Magnitude scale.

Tremors were felt in several areas of Pakistan, including Islamabad and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, prompting brief concern among residents. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also confirmed that the shaking was experienced in neighbouring regions, including parts of China and Afghanistan.

Authorities across the affected areas reported no injuries or structural damage following the quake. Officials stated that monitoring efforts are ongoing and reassured the public that precautionary measures remain in place to ensure safety in the region.

Seismically active areas across Central and South Asia frequently experience such tremors, and experts continue to stress the importance of preparedness and awareness to minimise risks during seismic events.
