Dubai Municipality launches global challenge to build world’s first fully robotic residential villa

Dubai Municipality has announced a global challenge to construct the world’s first residential villa built entirely using robotic systems, marking a major step in the emirate’s strategy to modernize and future-proof its construction sector.

Unveiled on Tuesday, the landmark project will be delivered through an international consortium of more than 25 technology companies and academic institutions. Managed in partnership with Zacua Ventures and the Würth Group, the initiative aims to move automated construction beyond the experimental stage and into a commercially viable, scalable model for the global housing market.

A new hub for construction innovation

The announcement was made during the activation of the Construction Innovation and Research Centre, known as 04 ConTech Valley, at Expo City Dubai. The center has been established as a dedicated hub for testing next-generation construction technologies, advanced materials, and innovative urban infrastructure solutions.

Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said the adoption of advanced construction technologies is a cornerstone of Dubai’s long-term development vision.

“The adoption of advanced construction technologies represents a cornerstone of Dubai’s vision to develop a more efficient, sustainable and resilient sector,” he said, adding that the global challenge is designed to bridge the gap between startup-led innovation and real-world commercial application.

A $30 billion global shift

The push towards automation comes as Dubai Municipality released its Global ConTech Report, which projects that worldwide investment in construction technology will exceed $30 billion by 2033. According to the report, the sector is expected to grow at an annual rate of 17.5%, driven by a global shortage of skilled labor and increasing confidence in technologies such as robotics and additive manufacturing.

To support this growth, a new ConTech Working Group has been formed in collaboration with Dubai Chambers. The group will provide a structured platform for government entities, developers, investors, and researchers to coordinate on regulatory frameworks, standards, and investment pathways.

The 70-70 Strategy

In a significant move for the local construction industry, Dubai Municipality has also partnered with Sobha Realty to launch the 70-70 Strategy, a roadmap aimed at accelerating industrialized construction.

The strategy targets shifting 70% of construction activities to off-site manufacturing and achieving 70% automation within those facilities by 2030, positioning Dubai as a global leader in smart, automated building practices.

Together, the robotic villa challenge, the launch of 04 ConTech Valley, and the 70-70 Strategy signal Dubai’s ambition to redefine how homes are built, not only locally, but across the global construction industry.
