Bahrain Marks Milestone With First-Ever Pet Cataract Surgery
Bahrain has achieved a significant milestone in veterinary medicine with the country’s first-ever cataract surgery performed on a pet, marking a major advancement in the level of medical care now available for animals in the Kingdom. The successful procedure highlights the growing sophistication of veterinary services and specialist expertise within Bahrain.
The groundbreaking case involved a 12-year-old Shih Tzu whose owners noticed changes in his behaviour, including frequently bumping into objects and struggling with everyday navigation. Specialist ophthalmic examinations confirmed that the dog was suffering from cataracts, a condition that clouds the eye’s lens and severely impairs vision.
Following the diagnosis, Charis Vets’ in-house ophthalmic surgeon and medical team developed a detailed, case-specific treatment plan aimed at restoring the dog’s sight. The surgery was successfully performed by Chief Surgeon Dr Sooryadas Surendran, assisted by in-house veterinary ophthalmologist Dr Melvin Varghese and Clinical Director Dr Hansel Geo Thomas. The coordinated approach reflects the increasing availability of advanced, specialist-led veterinary care in Bahrain.
The milestone coincides with Charis Vets’ tenth-year anniversary, during which the clinic has reaffirmed its commitment to social responsibility. As part of this initiative, Charis Vets is offering one free advanced ophthalmic surgery for a cat or dog, supporting families who may otherwise be unable to access such specialised treatment.
Known for providing comprehensive specialist services—including ophthalmology, neurology, gynaecology, laparoscopy, orthopaedics, and cardiology Charis Vets’ achievement represents a new chapter in pet healthcare in Bahrain. The successful surgery not only restores quality of life for the animal involved but also signals the expanding range of advanced treatment options now available to pets across the Kingdom.
