Bahrain sends new consumer protection law to Parliament with stricter penalties

Bahrain’s government has submitted a new draft Consumer Protection Law to Parliament, aiming to strengthen safeguards for shoppers and enhance oversight of business practices.

The proposed legislation introduces clearer and more detailed rules governing promotions, discounts, and sales, ensuring greater transparency for consumers. Businesses will be required to present accurate pricing and promotional information, reducing the risk of misleading offers.

Under the draft law, authorities will be granted expanded powers to review contracts, invoices, and other commercial documents. This move is intended to improve enforcement and ensure that companies comply with consumer protection standards.

The law also outlines stricter penalties for violations. Businesses found breaching the rules could face fines of up to BD2,000 per day, along with the possibility of temporary closure in serious cases.

Officials say the updated framework is designed to align with evolving market practices while reinforcing consumer confidence. The initiative reflects Bahrain’s broader efforts to create a fair and transparent commercial environment that protects both shoppers and legitimate businesses.
