Aamir Khan & Team Spark Sequel Buzz: Has Rajkumar Hirani Finally Locked 3 Idiots 2?
More than a decade after 3 Idiots changed the landscape of Hindi cinema, reports suggest that Aamir Khan and filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani are finally circling back to the blockbuster that made “All is well” a national mantra. The duo, long expected to collaborate on a Dadasaheb Phalke biopic, have reportedly paused that project after months of script revisions. Instead, they’ve returned to familiar territory the beloved 2009 hit that broke box-office records, shaped pop culture, and made India collectively question the point of engineering degrees.
According to early reports, Hirani has locked the script for the much-rumoured 3 Idiots sequel. The film is said to be set 15 years after the gang’s memorable reunion in Ladakh, where Pia and Rancho sealed their long-awaited romance, Phunsukh Wangdu stepped into the spotlight, and Chatur met his match once again. The core cast Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi is reportedly on board, although supporting favourites like Chatur, Virus, Mona, and the real Ranchhoddas remain unconfirmed.
Insiders say the creative team believes the sequel is “as funny, as emotional, and as meaningful as the first,” a tall claim given the original’s status as a cultural landmark. Hirani has apparently carried the seed of this sequel for years, only recently cracking the script he felt honored the legacy of 3 Idiots, which itself drew inspiration from Chetan Bhagat’s bestselling novel Five Point Someone.
Meanwhile, Hirani and long-time collaborators Abhijat Joshi and Vidhu Vinod Chopra are also making headway on Munna Bhai 3. With Arshad Warsi recently hinting that the long-delayed threequel is finally gathering momentum, fans of the iconic duo Munna and Circuit may soon have double the reason to celebrate.
