Over 1,000 Commuters Take Self-Driving Car Journeys in Riyadh

Riyadh — More than 1,000 commuters have taken self-driving car journeys in the Saudi capital since the launch of the pilot autonomous transport service at Roshn Front and Princess Noura University in July, the Transport General Authority (TGA) announced.

The pilot project, operated in partnership with Uber and WeRide, marks a significant milestone in Saudi Arabia’s push to adopt smart mobility technologies under Vision 2030. The TGA confirmed that the program will expand with new routes across Riyadh and a fleet increase to over 20 autonomous vehicles by the end of the year.

The expansion involves cooperation between several government entities, including the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information, and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization.

Members of the public can book rides through the Uber app, with safety officers present in every vehicle to oversee performance and ensure compliance with safety standards. The TGA said it continues to monitor all technical aspects of the initiative as part of efforts to advance sustainable and innovative transport solutions.

In a related development, July also saw the launch of an autonomous food delivery project at Roshn Front, in partnership between Roshn Group and Jahez. Licensed by the TGA, the service aims to reduce delivery times and carbon emissions, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s growing focus on green and digital innovation in logistics.
