Qatar has been named an interested party in hosting the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Qatar Olympic Committee announced on 6 October.

The committee said the International Olympic Committee had confirmed a list of interested parties and published guidance for potential hosts as part of its revised selection process. The announcement concerns an early stage of that process, not an award of hosting rights or confirmation as a shortlisted finalist.

Fatima Al Kuwari, chief executive of the Doha 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Bid Committee, welcomed the step and described it as the beginning of a long journey.

She said the ambition is to build on Qatar’s experience of staging major events, with a proposed Games model focused on athletes, accessibility and lasting benefits for society.

Qatar News Agency also reported the confirmation. Further stages remain before a host is selected.
