FTSE Russell has added Oman to its watch list for a possible move from Frontier to Secondary Emerging market status, according to its annual country classification review published on 6 October 2026.
Oman remains a Frontier market; the announcement is a review step, not a completed upgrade.
The index provider said Oman meets its required Quality of Markets criteria, as well as minimum market-size and securities-count requirements for Secondary Emerging status. Those assessments underpin its decision to place the country on the watch list.
FTSE Russell’s classification framework considers access to financial markets and incorporates dialogue with exchanges, regulators and the investment community. Its next country-classification update is scheduled for April 2027.
The announcement does not specify a date for any future reclassification of Oman.
