Qatar Museums marked International White Cane Day on 15 October with a celebration and panel discussion at the National Museum of Qatar, highlighting the experiences and achievements of people with visual impairments.

The event brought together museum specialists, advocates and the Qatar Cultural Center for the Blind to discuss access to culture and greater public understanding.

Listening to lived experience

Educator and advocate Noura Al Maslamani called for people with visual impairments to help shape the programmes intended for them. She also challenged stereotypes, stressing that blind people have diverse abilities and experiences.

Speaking about family support, she described how her mother learned Braille to assist her education and communication at home.

Making museums more accessible

Museum programme specialist Dr. Joumana Obeid outlined support including specialised tours, assistive tools and reception staff trained to guide visitors with disabilities.

The discussion emphasised that accessible cultural experiences depend on listening to visitors and adapting services to their needs.
